These workshops are about building understanding, developing skills, and setting you up for success when working with young people.

Workshop One we will focus on gaining some awareness of your working style and how to refine this to best support the work you do, particularly when you’re in a space that you might find a little uncertain.

Core Components
  • Who are the young people you are working with?
  • Reasons why it can be difficult to work with young people. What gets in the way becomes the way.
  • Climer Cards: What personal challenges do you face when working with young people? How to ask clarifying questions.

Workshop Two we delve into how the teenage brain works, and how that might play out in the young person you find yourself in front of. We also cover skills and tips to showcase what this means in practice.

Core Components
  • How do we show up when working with young people? Gaining control of our own mindset by managing our state.
  • Personal values when working with young people. In my values, out of my values, and slippery.
  • Leaving assumptions at the door. Resisting the urge to 'fix it'.
  • Understanding how the teenage brain works and how it affects behaviour.

Workshop Three begins with a summary of the previous weeks and then builds on strategies and practical tools to use when working with young people. We will also explore the concepts of empathy, validation, support, and understanding.

Core Components
  • Recap.
  • The brain and its drive to stay safe. Developing self-awareness, emotional regulation, and resilience.
  • Empathy, empathy hits, and empathy phrases.
  • The Scaling Question and Stopping the B-Grade movie.
  • Resources to have in your toolkit.
  • Course evaluation.

Starting further study or a full-time job is a tough balance between new adventures and longing for the familiar. It can feel overwhelming navigating challenges and seeking the right life balance—a feeling many of us can understand.

Here's what some past students have said about leaving the island:
  • "The first few months were isolating before I really met people."
  • "Starting from scratch just you and your suitcase is hard because you're building your day-to-day life from the start."
  • "One of the most challenging years of my life so far."
  • "A very fun and a scary experience I will never forget."

"Beyond Norfolk: Relocation and Connection" is a specialised mentoring program designed to provide support to recent school leavers from Norfolk Island who are transitioning into post-school study or full-time work.

Initiative and Support:

This initiative, backed by the Norfolk Island Health and Wellbeing Team, was sparked by suggestions from local young individuals. They believed having a mentor during post-school transitions would be helpful.
However, reaching out for support in advance of challenges is not always common among recent school leavers. When they find themselves in stressful situations, they may not be aware of available resources or may not feel comfortable expressing their struggles.

This is where the Beyond Norfolk Program steps in.

Our mentors, recent post-school leavers, are well-trained and fully supported in guiding their mentees through challenges. Together, they focus on working through obstacles for a smoother transition.

Here are key strategies past students have found helpful:
  • Build friendships and connections.
  • Establish routines for stability.
  • Balance time management in new environments.
  • Prioritise mental health and learn from experiences.
  • Explore interests to prevent boredom.
  • Seek advice and support from parents when needed.
  • Stay connected with home for emotional support.
  • Prioritise self-care and rest.
  • Adapt to university or work life with effective time management.
